How to cancel a gym or fitness membership

General guidance for gym and fitness memberships: what happens if you do nothing, how to cancel, what to check and what to keep. It isn’t about any one company, so check your own contract for the details.

What happens if you do nothing

  • It keeps running and billing until you cancel.
  • If there’s a notice period, you may miss it and owe the next cycle.

How to cancel, step by step

  1. Check your contract for notice period and minimum term
  2. Send written cancellation by email or certified letter
  3. Cancel before the renewal date to avoid auto-renewal
  4. Stop the direct debit only after confirming cancellation
  5. Keep written proof and ask for confirmation

  • Find the notice period (days before renewal).
  • Check whether you must cancel in writing.
  • Ask for written confirmation of the final billing date.

Watch out for

  • Some gyms require cancellation at the club or by registered email/letter.
  • Freezes are not cancellations; make sure billing stops.

When to start

Start about 14 days before the renewal date⁠—earlier if there is a notice period, so you still have time to decide, compare and send your notice.

Replace the parts in brackets. Send it to the address in your contract or on the provider’s contact page, and keep the reply.

Contracts in Germany: notice periods, form and the cancel button

If you live in Germany: consumer contracts on standard terms (AGB) signed on or after March 1, 2022⁠—gyms, streaming, magazine subscriptions⁠—may run for an initial term of two years at most, with no more than one month’s notice before it ends. An automatic renewal may only extend them for an indefinite period, after which you can cancel at any time with at most one month’s notice. Insurance contracts are excluded from these rules.

How you give notice: for contracts signed on or after October 1, 2016, standard terms may not require a stricter form than text form (Textform), nor special delivery requirements. Text form means a readable statement that names you, on a durable medium⁠—an email, for example. A clause that only accepts registered mail or canceling in person is therefore invalid. Registered mail can still be useful as proof that your notice arrived.

Since July 1, 2022, businesses that let you sign up online must offer a cancellation button. If one is missing, you may cancel at any time without notice.
