How does the German citizenship test work?
On test day you receive a booklet with 33 questions and have 60 minutes to answer them. Each question has four answer options, and exactly one of them is correct. You pass with at least 17 correct answers.
The 30 general questions cover the topic areas “living in a democracy,” “history and responsibility” and “people and society.” Three more are about the federal state where you are registered with your primary residence.
You register at an approved test site (Prüfstelle) of the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF); the local office handling your citizenship application (Einbürgerungsbehörde) can tell you which sites are nearby. Bring a valid photo ID—phones, dictionaries and personal notes are not allowed in the exam room.
BAMF scores all tests centrally and then sends you a paper certificate with your result. If you answer fewer than 17 questions correctly, you can take the test again.

300, 310 or 460: how many questions are there?
Everything is based on BAMF’s official question pool, the Gesamtfragenkatalog. It contains 300 general questions that apply everywhere in Germany, plus 10 questions for each of the 16 federal states—460 in total.
Only 310 of them matter for you: the 300 general questions and the 10 for your own state. Some are picture questions, for example choosing the right coat of arms from four images.
BAMF notes that the wording in the published pool can differ slightly from the questions on the actual test sheet. So learn what the right answer says—not just which letter it is.

Einbürgerungstest or “Leben in Deutschland” test?
Both tests draw on the same official question pool. The “Leben in Deutschland” (Life in Germany) test is the final exam of the orientation course that is part of the integration course. The Einbürgerungstest is the standalone test for your citizenship application.
If you earned the “Zertifikat Integrationskurs” and scored at least 17 out of 33 points in the “Leben in Deutschland” test, that result also counts as proof of the required knowledge for citizenship.
You don’t need to take the test if you have a school qualification from a German school (Schulabschluss), or if illness, disability or age prevents you from meeting the requirements. Your local citizenship office decides what applies in your case.

Is the test in English? Preparing in German
No—you take the test in German, and BAMF publishes its question catalog in German, too. The FAQ below sums up the official rules, with sources.
That is why this app is entirely in German—questions, answers and explanations. You get used to the German wording and terms of the test, instead of learning a translation and matching it up later.
Studying in German is not an extra hurdle—you need German for your citizenship application anyway, so it is part of your preparation. When a term is new to you, the explanations put it in context, and you can bookmark the question to come back to it.
A simple plan: go through all 310 questions in training, then take timed mock tests until you are consistently well above 17 correct answers. A test date and a daily reminder help you keep a steady pace.

Yes, you can download and use it for free. In training you study the 300 general questions plus the 10 for your federal state, and you can take mock tests with 33 questions and a 60-minute timer. The free version includes a daily allowance of practice questions and mock tests.
Premium is an optional monthly subscription through Apple; the App Store shows the current price before you buy. It renews automatically unless you cancel at least 24 hours before the current period ends. Among other things, Premium unlocks all 460 questions, unlimited training and mock tests, the study plan and detailed explanations.
Does the app include all the official questions?
The app is based on BAMF’s official question pool: 300 general questions and 10 per federal state. The free version covers the 310 questions that apply to your state. Premium gives you all 460 questions from all 16 states.
Is this an official BAMF app?
No. Der Einbürgerungstest App is an independent app by Aplo Apps and is not affiliated with the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF). The questions come from BAMF’s publicly available question catalog.
You take the actual test at a BAMF-approved test site. BAMF also runs its own online test center with the official questions.
Does the app work offline?
Yes. The app works fully offline and needs no sign-up or account, so you can study on the go, on the train or without a data connection.
Is the app available in English?
No. The app is deliberately all in German—the interface, the questions and the explanations—just like the test. That way you get used to the language and terms you will meet on test day, and train your knowledge and your German at the same time.
Which devices does the app run on?
iPhone and iPad with iOS or iPadOS 16.6 or later.
How do I manage or cancel Premium?
Premium is a monthly subscription billed to your Apple Account. In the app, the “Mehr” (More) tab shows your Premium status and the “Abo & Käufe” (subscriptions and purchases) section.
You can cancel at any time: open Settings on your iPhone or iPad, tap your name, then tap Subscriptions. To stop the next renewal, cancel at least 24 hours before the current period ends. Refunds are requested directly from Apple.
I found a mistake in a question. What should I do?
Tap “Fehler melden” (report a mistake) below the explanation, or email us with the question number. We read every message, and corrections go into upcoming app updates.

Which state questions will I get?
Three of the 33 questions are about the federal state where you are registered with your primary residence.
If you move after passing, your certificate stays valid with the authority for your new place of residence (Einbürgerungstestverordnung, EinbTestV).

Can I take the German citizenship test in English?
No. BAMF publishes the question catalog the test draws on in German, and dictionaries are not allowed in the exam room.
Applying for German citizenship also requires German at level B1 (section 10 of the Nationality Act, StAG). There are exceptions, for example if illness, disability or age prevents you from meeting the requirements.
