How to cancel a cloud storage plan

General guidance for cloud storage plans: what happens if you do nothing, how to cancel, what to check and what to keep. It isn’t about any one company, so check your own contract for the details.

What happens if you do nothing

  • It renews for the next term.
  • If you cancel, there may be a data retention window.

How to cancel, step by step

  1. Open account or billing settings online
  2. Download or move your stored files first
  3. Downgrade or cancel before the renewal date
  4. Check if it’s billed through Apple or Google
  5. Confirm the plan reverts to free tier

Checklist

  • Confirm what data is stored and export path if needed.
  • Check renewal period and cost.
  • Set a reminder before annual renewal.

Watch out for

  • Some providers delete data after a grace period.

When to start

Start about 21 days before the renewal date—earlier if there is a notice period, so you still have time to decide, compare and send your notice.

Documents to keep

  • Export confirmation
  • Invoices

An email you can copy

Replace the parts in brackets. Send it to the address in your contract or on the provider’s contact page, and keep the reply.
