How to cancel a club or association membership

General guidance for club and association memberships: what happens if you do nothing, how to cancel, what to check and what to keep. It isn’t about any one company, so check your own contract for the details.

What happens if you do nothing

  • Membership renews for the next term.
  • You may owe the full year if you miss the window.

How to cancel, step by step

  1. Check the membership terms for notice rules
  2. Notify the secretary or membership office in writing
  3. Submit before the annual renewal date
  4. Cancel any standing order after confirmation
  5. Request written confirmation of resignation

Checklist

  • Find the renewal/cancellation window (often annual).
  • Confirm how to cancel (email/letter/portal).
  • Ask for written confirmation.

Watch out for

  • Some memberships can only be canceled during specific months.

When to start

Start about 30 days before the renewal date⁠—earlier if there is a notice period, so you still have time to decide, compare and send your notice.

Clubs in Germany: leaving under the statutes

If you live in Germany: members may leave a club (Verein). Its statutes can provide that you can only leave at the end of a financial year or after a notice period, and that notice period may be two years at most.
